Library Building Works

Plans to create up to 80 additional study spaces and to open up the entrance on Floor 0 in the Library have been approved, with work starting 27th June and due to be completed by the end of August ready for the start of the new academic year.

The project will deliver a modern and dynamic learning environment with the quality of study spaces significantly enhanced. Comprised of a range of individual and group study areas, most spaces will come with power for improved digital learning. Plus, select areas will include new features such as sound muffling dividers. The plans will also see the entrance barriers removed, providing greater accessibility and a more inclusive space.

These plans are in response to user feedback from students including Student Voice and Pulse surveys asking for a wider range of spaces, more capacity in the Library, and improved power supply. We’re very pleased to be able to deliver a solution for users as part of ongoing efforts to improve the Library service and offering.

Building works are due to start on the 27th June and completed by the end of August, ready for the start of the new academic year.

Floor 0 (excluding the IT suite) will not be accessible to users for the duration of the works. However, all other floors will remain open as usual. There will be a new signposted route for accessing the Library.

From 27th June until the end of the works, the main entrance to the Library will be closed. Entrance and exit will be via the Lecture Theatres, and it is a fully accessible route (Lecture Theatre lifts will be fully operational by 27th June). The route will be clearly signposted for users.

Floor 0 will be closed but all other floors will remain open as usual.

The prayer facilities in the Lecture Theatre building will be fully operational and accessible whilst the Library building works take place.

For the duration of the works the Library Helpdesk and Reception will be relocated to room LIB 01.36. The new route into the Library will lead directly to 01.36 where you will be able to issue and return your items, and speak to Library staff if you have a query. Security staff will be present in this room 24/7.

Helpdesk hours and some Library services will be impacted during this time.

27th June
Helpdesk will be closed in the morning, opening at 1pm in 01.36

From 1 July to 1 September, the Helpdesk services will be available as follows;

Monday - Friday

Live Chat available 9am-5pm

In person Helpdesk (01.36) is staffed 10am-4pm.

Saturday - Sunday

Live Chat available 11am-6pm

In person Helpdesk is available via the bell 11am-6pm

Any further updates or changes to Library services will be added to this page so please feel free to check back regularly.

Library study spaces and physical books will still be available and accessible to users throughout the building works.

To facilitate the addition of up to 80 new study spaces, existing staff offices on Floor 0 will be relocated to Floor 1 in Room 1.06.

Room 1.06 will no longer be available to book from 14th June as it becomes new staff offices. However it is important to note that the attached kitchen will still be accessible to PGRs, and the dedicated PGR and PGT spaces on Floor 2 of the Library will remain.

The IT suite on Floor 0 will still be accessible to staff and students, and all PCs will remain available to users. This area will be accessible by the Library extension lifts / staircase.

The High Demand collection will no longer be housed on Floor 0. The books in this collection will be inter-filed across the Library bookshelves, in their relevant subject areas. The High Demand collection will continue to have 3-day loans, and will be clearly labelled with High Demand stickers.

We will endeavour to let users know in advance of any noise disturbance as this will be likely throughout the duration of the works. We recommend using floors in the Library further away from the construction (Floor 3, Floor 02) or utilising Booker to find other suitable study areas across campus.
