What are Read and Publish Deals

Read and Publish deals are viewed as transitional journal agreements which involve publishers moving away from separate charging for subscriptions to journal content (read) and Article Processing Charges (APCs) for open access articles (publish). Read and Publish deals look to combine both aspects at a reduced overall cost.

In the UK, Read and Publish deals are negotiated on a national level by Universities UK (UUK) / Jisc.

Where Read and Publish deals are agreed by UUK/ Jisc, UEA has the option to subscribe to the deal, typically at an increased cost to a previous Read-only subscription deal but with a substantial reduction in fees for open access publishing. The advantage of such deals is that, by fully or partially covering APC costs, they make it easier for UEA researchers to comply with the publishing requirements of our grant funders, the REF and UEA Open Access Policy. Agreement offers are jointly assessed by the Library and RIN. The alternative to these deals is to return to just purchasing standard institutional subscriptions to each title, but, typically, that approach tends to be more expensive or offer narrower access to content than the bigger negotiated deals.

UEA currently subscribes to several Read and Publish deals.
