UK HE sector economic output is estimated to be at least £116bn. With better employment outcomes for those that have graduated. The government's levelling up strategy includes improving skills and ministers have said that HE institutions play an important part in supporting regional economies. There has been criticism of the government's plan to restrict access to some HE courses and for not emphasising the benefits provided by the sector.
