Assistive Technology

You can access a number of Assistive Technologies via the Library webpages and student PCs on campus.

Converting Documents Using SENSUS Access

SENSUS Access is a free to use self-service conversion tool for creating documents in accessible formats. You can use it to convert documents into a range of alternate media including audio books (MP3 and DAISY), e-books (EPUB, EPUB3 and Mobi) and digital Braille. The service can also be used to convert inaccessible documents such as image-only PDF files, JPG pictures and Microsoft PowerPoint presentations into more accessible formats.

Upload your original document, choose the output format you require, and the converted document will be emailed to you.

Windows Ease of Access

Windows Ease of Access offers a range of tweaks to Windows to help users with vision, hearing and mobility impairments use the PCs more easily. You can find East of Access listed under the Settings of the device you are working on.

Use the search bar to go to Settings > Ease of Access, or click the Windows icon bottom right of your screen and open the program Settings.

You can find more information on Ease of Access on the Windows help pages.

ColorVeil

ColorVeil adds a colour filter over your screen and over any application you are using. It helps with eye strain, Dyslexia, Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, or Visual Stress. You can easily turn the filter on and off and customize the colour and opacity. Tints can match an optometrist prescription and ColorVeil can reduce screen brightness, even below its lowest available setting.

If you feel you would benefit from ColorVeil contact the IT Service using live chat or by email.

Microsoft Lens

Microsoft Lens is a free app which can trim, enhance and make pictures of whiteboards and documents more readable. You can use Microsoft Lens to convert images to PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files, digitize printed or handwritten text, and save to OneNote, OneDrive, or your local device. You can even import images that are already on your device using Gallery.

Magnification

The Library has a number of devices to help you magnify printed material. There is a desktop magnifier on Floor 1 of the Library near the Librarian offices. Please ask a member of staff if you need help finding this.

We also have a handheld video magnifier which you can borrow from the Library Helpdesk.
