LEAN Library

Frequently Asked Questions

Lean Library is available to download on PCs and laptops for Google ChromeFirefoxSafariEdge, and Opera.

Simply download Lean Library and select University of East Anglia from the list. If you are affiliated with another institution that has the Lean Library tool, you can select multiple institutions.

Lean Library is already installed on all UEA student PCs on campus, for browsers Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

Please note: If you have downloaded other browser extensions or tools, they may have an impact on the performance of the Lean Library tool e.g. Zotero

When the browser tool is downloaded, the Lean Library icon displays next to the web address.

= You have access to content here

= Additional information about accessing this resource

= You do not have access to content here

When you come to a site where UEA Library has access, you will see the “Get Access” pop-up. Click on the “Get Access” button and you will be taken to the UEA login box. Even though this pop-up appears on each new site you visit, you should only need to login once per browser session.

If you have chosen to skip the pop-up messages, you will only be taken to the UEA login box once per browser session and will be automatically logged-in at each new site you visit.

If you need to login differently,  Lean Library will let you know and give you help.

If a resource is only available on campus, Lean Library will let you know.

If a copy of the article is available elsewhere (including open access versions), Lean Library will let you know.

And if UEA Library doesn’t have access to the content you want, you have the option to make an Interlending request.

Lean Library works best for PCs and laptops (including Macs).

iOS devices - Unfortunately Lean Library is not available on browsers such as Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc. on the iOS platform since these browsers do not support an extension framework.  However, there is an alternative browser tool for iOS devices (iPhone & iPad) called the Academic Browser. You can download the Academic Browser app  to your iOS device.

Android devices - Unfortunately Lean Library is not available on Android devices as the default browser on Android (e.g. Google Chrome in many cases) does not offer extension support at this time.

The Highlight & Search function allows you to highlight a key word or phrase on a web page, and then search for those terms in UEA Library discovery tools or Google Scholar.

  • Use your cursor to highlight a key word or phrase on a web page.
  • Right-click, select or hover over Lean Library.
  • Select which discovery tool you want to use.  Your search results will open in a new tab.

If you want to choose what type of pop-up notifications you get, click on the Lean Library icon and select the settings cog.

Under the Notifications section, you can choose what pop-up you see.

If you use Google Scholar to search for material, UEA will automatically be selected as your home institution. You will then be able to see full text links to UEA Library subscribed content.

The Lean Library will also give you results from UEA Library Search for the same search terms. Clicking on any of those results, will take you to the full record in UEA Library Search. If you click on Show more results at the bottom, your search terms are carried into Library Search for a full search.

You can switch Lean Library off and on by clicking on the icon in your tool bar and moving the slider.

Click on the Lean Library icon in your tool bar and go to the settings cog. Use the drop-down menu under Text size to increase or decrease the font size.

While you are using the Lean Library browser tool, neither Lean Library nor UEA will hold or have access to any personal data on your browsing history.
