Copyright in Your Student's Thesis

The University’s position with regard to the ownership of the copyright in any work created by a UEA student is set out in full in sections 5 and 6 of the University's Intellectual Property Regulations and in the Student Intellectual Property Guide. Key points are summarised below.

The University, including PhD supervisors, should not claim ownership of copyright (or any other intellectual property) of work created by students, unless by written agreement with the student or student’s sponsor.

The University does not claim any copyright on materials created by research students. However, as a precondition of registration for their research degree all research students agree to formally assign any Intellectual Property arising from their studies to the University should the University, at its sole discretion, request them to do so.

Note that copyright is just one type of protection for an intellectual property. The Intellectual Property Office provides further information on intellectual property. For specific enquiries, contact researchandenterprise@uea.ac.uk

If there is concern about a Supervisor's or another party's IP being shared in the e-thesis, this should be discussed prior to submission and, if necessary, an appropriate embargo or retraction sought. Contact the Postgraduate Research Service and/or researchandenterprise@uea.ac.uk.
